Central High Needs: Smart Growth guided development on the South and West sides of the campus.
Because: It is likely that Central High will build new facilities on the north and west sides of its three plus acre lot. Thought and care should be given to how this development will affect the neighborhood and the Governmental Plaza District. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has developed Principles of Smart Growth for land development. Some of the principles are intended for housing development but many of the principles apply to Central High's situation. Those that apply include:
Central is bordered by Jefferson on the west and Central Avenue on the south. These two important views of Central High have been neglected and have great potential. Several old growth Oak trees line the south and west perimeter and should be preserved.
- Mix land uses
- Create walkable neighborhoods
- Preserve open space
- Strengthen and direct development toward existing communities
- Provide a variety of transportation choices
- Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place
- Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration

In order to: A new circulation plan for the west end could relieve traffic and create a parkway feel. Safety would be improved. The neighborhood could become walkable. Important open spaces would be preserved.
